EAMA’s Video Competition culminated on April 14 with a film festival for the student teams, their families, friends and teachers at Quinebaug Valley Community College. A large crowd turned out for the “EAMYs”, where all of the videos were screened and a variety of honors were awarded.

The Eastern Advanced Manufacturing Alliance (EAMA) offered an opportunity for local high schools to partner with local manufacturers in a video challenge that educates students about career opportunities in manufacturing. The “Manufacturing a Path to Success” video competition builds on the overwhelming popularity of EAMA’s 2015 “What’s so Cool About Manufacturing?” video competition, which engaged 13 teams of students from 11 schools and attracted more than 5,000 votes.
EAMA’s goal is to educate students, teachers and parents about the manufacturing industry by pairing high school teams with local manufacturers to create videos that showcase the skills and education necessary for a manufacturing career.
Participating schools in this year’s competition include Old Saybrook High, Grasso Technical High School, Ellis Technical High School, New London Science and Technology Magnet School, Three Rivers Middle College, Woodstock Academy and the high schools from Montville, Killingly, Plainfield, Putnam and Windham. Fourteen companies from Windham, New London and Middlesex counties are participating in the 2016 event, including Collins & Jewell, Westminster Tool, Putnam Plastics, The Lee Company, J. Steele Services, Linemaster Switch, Jaypro Corporation, Web Industries, Bollore and Sound Manufacturing. Each team has a liaison at its paired manufacturing company.
Student teams met with their manufacturer several times: first to perform a set of interviews and have a preliminary tour of the company; then to review their proposed story and script; then to film, and finally to edit and proof the video. Each completed video is posted on the EAMA website, the paired manufacturing company website, and on the EAMA Youtube channel. An “American Idol-style” voting competition took place from March 28 to April 8, when viewers had the opportunity to vote online for their favorite video.
Schools and communities promoted voting for their videos and encouraged school engagement and pride. Finally, a film festival was held on April 14 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Quinebaug Valley Community College, where videos were screened and judged on creative merit.
